1990s
Christ Lutheran continued to expand in membership and outreach. The pews and the carpet in the sanctuary, worn from decades of use, were replaced.
The Easter Tableau was a reenactment of the story of the final days of Christ from Palm Sunday, through the crucifixion, held on the front lawn of the church. Members donned costumes and acted out the scenes as a recorded message told story. Folks could walk along the sidewalk and hear the entire story. It culminated with an invitation to celebrate the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
We Care, a food pantry at the church, had become a major outreach to those in need in the community. Pastor David Henske recognized that the church-operated food pantry was not efficient. Christ Lutheran joined with other community organizations to support the Brazosport Cares Food Pantry.
The 90’s saw the church blessed with a large and active high league group. Christi Matteck and Lorin Furlow began looking for ways to support these youth participating in the wider world of God’s church, by attending ELCA National Youth Gatherings and taking mission trips. Pumpkins were the answer (did you get it right?). In 1997, the first Pumpkin Patch was planted and the results were outstanding. And just like that…Christ Lutheran Church became known as The Pumpkin Patch Church!
Starting with just a partial truckload of pumpkins on pallets, today’s patch has grown to a full truckload of pumpkins and gourds.
Children come from across the area to enjoy Pumpkin Patch Story Time, fun and games. Even the teens and adults get in on the fun (and hard work!).
In the decades since, the Pumpkin Patch has flourished under the direction of dedicated leaders and hard-working volunteers. It has provided happy memories and beautiful pictures for families throughout the community.
As the patch has prospered, proceeds from the pumpkin and snack sales have been given back to various non-profit organizations benefiting schools, shelters, and aid organizations like the Society of St. Stephen.
